DELE and SIELE: the official Spanish exams

The short answer

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is a pass-or-fail exam at one chosen level, A1 to C2, issued by Spain’s Instituto Cervantes; the diploma never expires. The SIELE is a single computer-based test that scores you on a scale covering all levels, with a certificate valid for five years. Choose DELE for a permanent qualification, SIELE for a fast, flexible score.

With DELE you choose your level in advance. With SIELE, the test works out your level from your score in each of the four skills.

DELE or SIELE?

Both exams are recognised by universities, employers and governments in the Spanish-speaking world, and both follow the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), the six-level scale from A1 to C2. They differ in format, timing and how long the result lasts. Dates, fees and centres change each year, so always confirm them on the official websites before booking.

The four papers and how passing works

From A1 to C1, the DELE tests four skills in separate papers, grouped in pairs. You must pass each group on its own: a strong written group cannot make up for a weak spoken one. C2 combines the skills into three integrated tests.

Group 1 · written30 / 50 to pass
Reading comprehension Several texts with multiple-choice and matching questions: notices, articles, emails. Practise with graded reading
Written expression One or two writing tasks, from a short message at A1 to an essay at C1. Practise with writing tasks
Group 2 · spoken30 / 50 to pass
Listening comprehension Recordings of conversations, announcements and talks, each played twice. Practise with dictation
Oral expression A face-to-face conversation with an examiner, based on prepared tasks. Practise with starters and fillers
At A1–C1 each group is worth 50 points and you need at least 30 in each. Fail one group and you fail the diploma, though you see your score for every paper. C2 is built differently: three integrated papers (use of language with reading and listening; written expression and mediation; spoken expression and mediation), each worth about 33 points, and you need at least 20 in every one.

What each level means in practice

Choose a level to see what a candidate can do, the grammar it expects, and the Evolang lessons that cover it.

B1Threshold Deal with most situations while travelling, describe experiences and hopes, and give brief reasons for opinions. Writing task: a personal letter or diary entry

Try a mock exam at your level

Each mock has one task of every paper type: reading, listening with audio, grammar marked instantly with word-by-word explanations, a writing task with a model answer, and speaking prompts.

A twelve-week preparation plan

This plan assumes you are already close to the level you are sitting. Spend about five hours a week, and keep all four skills moving every week.

  1. Weeks 1–3 Find your gaps Do one past paper under exam conditions. Mark it and list the grammar and question types that cost you most.
  2. Weeks 4–7 Fix grammar and vocabulary Work through the lessons for your weakest areas. Learn the connectors for your level and use them in every piece of writing.
  3. Weeks 8–10 Practise each paper One timed paper per skill each week. Record your speaking tasks and listen back.
  4. Weeks 11–12 Full mock exams Two complete mock exams, timed, on separate days. Rest the day before the real exam.

Phrases for the speaking test

In the DELE speaking paper you talk with an examiner, usually after a short preparation time. These phrases help you manage the conversation politely, in the usted form the examiner will use with you.

More fillers and repair phrases, for any conversation, are in speaking practice.
