Technology in German: das Handy, herunterladen, and gegoogelt

Pick a tech verb
Separable verbPartizip: heruntergeladen
IchIladeloaddie Dateithe fileherunter.down
ikh LAA-de dee da-TAI hair-UN-ter · “I’m downloading the file.” Why: Separable: herunter goes to the end in the present; in the participle, ge- sits inside: herunter·ge·laden.

Short answer: German takes many tech words from English, then gives them German grammar: a gender (der Computer, die App, das WLAN), a capital letter, and German verb endings (googeln → ich habe gegoogelt). German also has its own words, often separable verbs: herunterladen (to download) splits into ich lade … herunter. A mobile phone is das Handy, a word English speakers don’t use at all.

Devices by gender

Der Laptop, die Tastatur, das Ladekabel

English loanwords take a gender too, often from a German word with the same meaning: die App like die Anwendung, die E-Mail like die Post.
