Speaking German at C1: presenting, discussing, debating

At C1 you speak at length on complex topics, structure what you say, and hold your own in a discussion. The grammar is already in place. What carries you now is a set of discourse phrases: the ready-made expressions that open, link, defend and close.

Zweitens … Hinzu kommt …“„Zusammenfassend …“„Gibt es Fragen?“ Announce the structure at the start and follow it: German listeners expect to know where a talk is going.

In a discussion: from full agreement to firm disagreement

German discussion culture is direct: disagreeing openly is normal and not rude, as long as it is about the point, not the person. Choose a position on the scale to see how to say it. The same techniques work in English; see our guides to public speaking and presentations.

fully agreepartly agreeneutraldisagreefirmly disagree Das sehe ichgenauso. Im Prinzip ja,aber … Das kommtdarauf an. Ich sehe dasetwas anders. Da muss ich Ihnenwidersprechen. Etwas (“a little”) and im Prinzip (“in principle”) soften; Da muss ich … sets out firm disagreement without being rude.
In a German oral exam, using several points on this scale shows range. Most discussions move between the middle three.
