German health vocabulary: Kopfschmerzen, mir tut weh, and the Arztpraxis

Wo tut es weh? · pick where it hurts
body partKopfder Kopf · head + painschmerzendie Schmerzen · pains = one wordKopfschmerzenheadache
Way 1 · haben + compound
IchIhabehaveKopfschmerzen.headache
ikh HAA-be KOPF-shmehr-tsen · “I have a headache.”
Way 2 · mir tut … weh
Mirto-metutdoesdertheKopfheadweh.hurt
meer toot dair KOPF VAY · “My head hurts.”
Why: Kopfschmerzen joins Kopf and Schmerzen into one plural noun, so no article: ich habe Kopfschmerzen. In way 2 the body part is the subject: singular Kopf, so tut; mir is dative, “to me”; weh goes to the end because wehtun is separable.

Short answer: German builds pain words by joining a body part to -schmerzen: Kopfschmerzen (headache), Bauchschmerzen (stomach ache). Or say Mir tut der Kopf weh, literally “to me does the head hurt”, with mir in the dative. At the doctor’s you show your health insurance card, and if you are off work you get a sick note, die Krankmeldung. Wish someone well with Gute Besserung!

The body

Der Kopf, die Hand, das Bein

Each body part has a gender and a plural you need for the dative: mit den Händen, “with the hands”. Tap to hear the word with its article.

Mir tut … weh

Mir tut der Kopf weh, mir tun die Füße weh

Wehtun (to hurt) is a separable verb: weh goes to the end. The body part is the subject, so the verb agrees with it (tut for one, tun for several). The person who feels the pain is in the dative case: mir (to me), dir (to you), ihm (to him), ihr (to her).

Symptoms

Ich habe Fieber, mir ist schlecht

Most symptoms are nouns after ich habe (I have). Feelings of the whole body use the dative with sein and no subject: Mir ist schlecht, literally “to me is bad”, means “I feel sick”.

Ich habe …a thing you have
Mir ist …how the body feels (dative)
Ich bin …a state (adjective)
At the doctor’s

From the Termin to the Krankmeldung

In Germany you usually see your Hausarzt (family doctor) first. You need a Termin (appointment) and your Versichertenkarte (health insurance card). The doctor speaks to you as Sie, the polite “you”.

Medicine

Apotheke or Drogerie?

Medicines are sold only in an Apotheke (pharmacy, red A sign), even paracetamol. A Drogerie sells toiletries and cosmetics, not medicine. Many medicines are rezeptpflichtig: you need a prescription.
