Russian noun tables: 16 irregular nouns

Every Russian noun changes its ending for each of the six cases (the forms that show a word’s job in the sentence) in the singular and the plural: twelve forms in all. The full set is called a declension. Most nouns follow the patterns in the cases guide; these sixteen don’t, and they are among the most common words in the language.

Irregular nouns hide part of their stem in the dictionary form. Once you know it, the rest of the table follows ordinary endings.

Five kinds of irregular

The sixteen nouns fall into five groups. Learn the group and you can decline other nouns like them.

DISAPPEARING VOWEL · THE е DROPS WHEN AN ENDING IS ADDED оте́ц → отца́отцу́отцо́м a-TYETS · fatherat-TSA · of fatherat-TSU · to fatherat-TSOM · with father день→дняднём dyen’ · daydnya · of daydnyom · by day Red: the vowel that drops. Blue: the case ending that pushes it out.
The vowel exists only to make the bare dictionary form easy to say. Once an ending adds a syllable, it is no longer needed.
Hidden stemмать, дочь, вре́мя, и́мя Part of the stem disappears in the dictionary form and comes back everywhere else: мат-ер-и, врем-ен-и.
A different word in the pluralчелове́к → лю́ди, ребёнок → де́ти The singular and plural come from different roots. Both halves decline normally.
Plural in -ьябрат, друг, стул, лист Add -ья in the nominative plural and keep the soft ь through all plural forms.
Plural in stressed -а́дом, го́род, глаз, лес, учи́тель Many common masculine nouns take -а́ or -я́ instead of -ы and move the stress to the end.
Disappearing vowelдень, ребёнок, це́рковь, оте́ц An о or е in the last syllable drops out once an ending is added: оте́ц → отца́.
