Writing in Russian: emails, letters and essays

Short answer: Russian writing follows clear conventions. A formal email opens with Уважа́емый (Dear, literally “respected”) plus name and patronymic, and closes with С уваже́нием (With respect). An informal one opens with Приве́т and closes with Пока́ or Обнима́ю. Essays rely on a fixed set of linking words. Below are the conventions, annotated models, and tasks to try yourself.

Openings and sign-offs

Choose by relationship, not by medium: the same rules apply to emails, letters and messages. Уважа́емый agrees in gender: Уважа́емый (to a man), Уважа́емая (to a woman), Уважа́емые (to several people). Tap a row to hear it. The same habits carry over from English; see our guide to writing skills.

The same news, written twice: once to a friend, once to a teacher. Tap a line to see its gloss; the notes on the right explain the choices.

InformalTo a friend
↳ Friends: Приве́т + short first name. ↳ Ask after the person first; it is polite even between friends. ↳ Дава́й + 1st person plural: “let’s…”. ↳ ты imperative: напиши́. ↳ Warm sign-off for close friends; no comma rule worries here.
FormalTo a teacher
↳ Уважа́емая (feminine) + first name and patronymic, then “!”. ↳ In formal letters Вы is often capitalised as a mark of respect. ↳ Formal register names the grade rather than using пятёрка. ↳ благодари́ть + accusative (Вас) + за + accusative. ↳ A woman writes Бу́ду ра́да. ↳ Full name under a formal sign-off.

Linking words for essays

Russian essays (сочине́ние) have a predictable shape, and examiners look for these words. Most introductory phrases are followed by a comma: Во-пе́рвых, …

A model essay (B2)

Topic: Ну́жно ли изуча́ть иностра́нные языки́, е́сли есть перево́дчики? (Is it worth learning foreign languages when translation apps exist?) About 120 words. Linking words are marked in red.

Introduction Many think that in the age of translation apps there is no longer any need to learn languages. Let us see whether that is true.Opens with the common view, then announces the question.
Arguments Firstly, a translator conveys words but not always meaning and tone. Secondly, knowing a language opens the door to another culture: books, films, jokes. Two numbered arguments, each one sentence.
The other side On the other hand, for a tourist who only needs to buy a ticket, an app is quite enough.A fair counter-argument makes the essay more convincing.
Conclusion Thus, technology makes communication easier but does not replace real knowledge of a language. In my opinion, learning languages is always worth it.Sums up, then gives the writer’s own view.
