Colours in French: vert, verte, and why des chaussures marron never change

Le vestiaire · pick an item
Le nuancier · pick a colour
feminine une robe verte
unearobedressvertegreen
ün ROB VAIRT · “a green dress” Why: Feminine: add -e. You can hear it: VAIR → VAIRT.

Short answer: colours go after the noun and agree with it: add -e for feminine and -s for plural, un pull vert, une robe verte. Often you can hear the feminine: the silent final consonant comes alive (vert “vair”, verte “vairt”). Colours named after a thing, like marron (chestnut) and orange, never change, and neither do two-word colours: des yeux bleu clair.

Hear the feminine

Vert / verte, blanc / blanche

In French the final consonant of a word is often silent. Adding -e makes it heard, so many colours sound different in the feminine. Colours that already end in -e (rouge, jaune, rose) sound the same in every form. Tap a pair to hear both.

Colours that never change

Marron, orange, bleu clair: no agreement

Two groups stay exactly the same in every form. The rule has two famous exceptions, rose and mauve, which do agree.
