The French gerund: en marchant, en faisant, and the -ant form

Two things at once · pick an action and what you do at the same time
The main action
… while you
JeIchantesingenwhileconduisant.driving
zhuh SHONT on kon-dwee-ZON · “I sing while driving.”
How it’s builtnous conduisons → conduisantBoth actions have the same subject, je, so French can use the gerund. English says “while …ing”.

Short answer: the gerund is en + the -ant form of a verb, and it means “while doing” or “by doing”: je chante en conduisant (I sing while driving). Build the -ant form from the nous present tense: nous marchons → marchant. Only three verbs break the rule: être → étant, avoir → ayant, savoir → sachant. The subject of both actions must be the same person. The -ant form never changes for gender or number.

Building the -ant form

Nous faisons → faisant

Take the nous form, remove -ons and add -ant. It works even for irregular verbs.

Tout en: contrast or emphasis

Tout en souriant

Adding tout before en stresses that the two actions happen together, often with a sense of contrast, like “while still” or “even as”.

When -ant becomes an adjective

Un film amusant, des enfants souriants

Many -ant forms are also adjectives. As adjectives they agree like any other (-e, -s); as verbs, after en, they never change. A few change spelling too.

Without en

En lisant or lisant? The participle in writing

Without en, the -ant form is the present participle (participe présent). It belongs to written French and replaces a qui clause or a reason. Ayant and étant + past participle show that one action came first. These sound formal in speech.
