Spanish word formation: -ción, -mente, des- and building words you’ve never seen

One root, a whole family · pick a root
The root of trabajar (to work). Every ending adds a job: person, place, quality.

Short answer: Spanish builds words by adding prefixes (pieces at the start, like des-) and suffixes (pieces at the end, like -ción) to a root. Many match English: -ción = -tion (la nación), -dad = -ty (la ciudad, city), -mente = -ly (rápidamente). Des- reverses a verb: hacer (do) → deshacer (undo). -ero or -ista makes a person: el panadero (baker), el dentista. Learn a dozen of these and you can guess thousands of words.
