VA-ser be-SHTAYT aus VA-ser-shtof unt ZAU-er-shtof · “Water consists of hydrogen and oxygen.”Why:bestehen aus = to consist of. aus always takes the dative, but these nouns have no article here.
Short answer: German has native words for basic science: oxygen is der Sauerstoff (“sour stuff”), hydrogen der Wasserstoff (“water stuff”). Subjects mostly match English: die Physik, die Chemie, die Biologie. Research vocabulary comes in word families: forschen (to research), der Forscher (researcher), die Forschung (research). Lab reports use the passive with werden: Die Probe wird erhitzt (“The sample is heated”). Decimals take a comma: 3,5 is drei Komma fünf.

Forschen, der Forscher, die Forschung
German builds nouns from verbs in regular ways. Take the stem (the verb without -en): add -er for the person (masculine, der), -erin for a woman, and -ung for the activity (always feminine, die).
-ung nouns are always die. That one rule gives you the gender of hundreds of words: die Messung, die Untersuchung, die Entdeckung.

The passive in a lab report
Die Probe wird erhitzt
The German passive (where the thing acted on becomes the subject) uses werden + the past participle, which goes to the end of the sentence. For a past report, wurde replaces wird.

Reading numbers and symbols
Drei Komma fünf, zehn hoch sechs
German writes large numbers with a point or a thin space between groups of three: 1.000.000 or 1 000 000 (eine Million). Never use a comma there: 1,000 would mean one point zero.
