DALF C1 practice test: reading, listening, grammar, writing and speaking

Short answer: C1 is the level of fluent, flexible use: you can follow long, demanding texts, catch what is implied and express yourself precisely at work and in academic life. The real exam takes 4 h of written papers plus a 30-minute oral; this mock gives you one task of each type, marked instantly, with English translations to check yourself and a model answer for writing. Find out how the exam works in the DELF and DALF guide.

1. Quelle est la thèse de l’auteur ?
2. « Il conviendrait de nuancer » signifie…
3. Pourquoi supportons-nous moins bien ce qui résiste ?
4. Que critique l’auteur à la fin ?
2 · Compréhension de l’oral

Une courte conférence

Listen twice, as in the exam, before you read the transcript.

2. Que font la plupart des bilingues ?
3. Comment la conférencière juge-t-elle cette répartition ?
3 · Grammaire et vocabulaire

Choose the right form

1. Ce n’est pas que je ne … pas, c’est que je ne peux pas.
2. … tu arriveras, préviens-moi.
3. … su, je ne serais pas venu.
5. L’auteur, … j’ai lu tous les romans, viendra demain.
4 · Production écrite

Write, then compare with a model

Write an argued essay of about 250 words for a magazine responding to the claim that studying the humanities is a waste of time.

5 · Production orale

Speak for the time given

Read a short file on artificial intelligence in schools, then present a structured talk for about ten minutes and debate with the examiners.

Tap a phrase to hear it, then use at least three of them. Time yourself: the examiner marks fluency, range and accuracy, not perfect content.
